24-year old Dominican-born Pedro Almonte and 20-year old Mohamed Mahmood Alessa appeared for a three-minute court hearing in Newark, New Jersey after being arrested Saturday evening at JFK International. They were held without bail on Monday.
They were arrested prior to boarding separate flights to Egypt. The US authorities say they sought to eventually join an Islamic militant group in Somalia where they would receive terror training from al-Quaida-affiliated jihadists to unleash attacks against fellow Americans. The two face charges of conspiring to kill, maim and kidnap persons outside the US by joining al-Shabab. If convicted, they could face life in prison.
Reportedly, to train for their plan they lifted weights, bought military-style pants and water bottles, played paintball and violent video games, watched terrorist videos online.
US Attorney Paul Fishman said the two suspects weren't directly responsible for any destruction. The arrest came because the authorities deemed their intent was dangerous and warranted serious criminal charges.
News reports say that had no known connections to terrorist groups, and their planned trip to Somalia apparently was merely a leap of faith that they'd be embraced by the jihadists. What they did not know is that investigators had been following them since 2006.
