According to reports from Cotui, hundreds of workers at the Barrick Gold mining company have gone on strike. They are demanding that human resources contractor Grana y Montero increase their wages by 35%, pay them medical insurance, and overtime. The protests began on Monday, as reported in Hoy. Workers' spokesman Arquimedes Mateo said that around 3,000 workers hired by G&M, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, do not have medical insurance. He pointed out that a large number of Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Honduran and Mexican workers have been hired to work on the mine under better working conditions and benefits than the Dominicans, despite similar workloads. He called on the Ministry of Labor to intervene and ensure that local labor regulations are met.
