Religious, popular, barrio and community organizations from the southern areas of the city of Santiago held a mass march yesterday as a way of calling on the government to restart a series of half-finished projects and other demands. Holding up banners and chanting slogans, the demonstrators set out from Barrio Nuevo, La Herradura, and arrived at the Governor's office, where a commission of community leaders delivered a document listing their complaints. Residents from Bella Vista, La Barranquita, Reparto Peralta, La Yaguita de Pastor, Villa Liberacion, La Otra Banda, Pastor, La Herradura and other sectors took part in the demonstration. Their demands included the construction of a high school, street and sidewalk repairs, completion of the aqueduct, improved garbage disposal and other complaints. Community groups spokesman Marciano Garcia said that they were also asking for lower electricity rates and an end to the blackouts.
