First Lady Margarita Cedeno is skirting journalists' queries about her plans to seek the PLD presidential nomination in 2012. Despite an ongoing online campaign promoting Cedeno as a continuation of the Leonel Fernandez government, she refused to confirm or deny her aspirations. Her response was instead that she aspires "that all Dominicans should have opportunities for progress with values, with responsibility, with honesty and discipline."
By running for President, she would be emulating former Argentinean President Nestor Kirchner and President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in Argentina, and following in the footsteps of former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and President Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica.
The 2010 Constitution impedes President Fernandez from running for President. But, the PLD majority in Congress would enable the President to use recourses instilled in the Constitution to get around this impediment. In 2004, then President Hipolito Mejia used his majority in Congress to change the Constitution to enable him to run for President. Despite the effort, he lost to President Fernandez.
