Two Salvadorian exporters' groups are protesting what they describe as bureaucratic hoops to get their products into the DR. The situation could also be affecting Guatemala and Costa Rica. In a statement, The El Salvador Industrial Association (ASI) and the El Salvador Exporters Corporation (COEXPORT) said that they "observe with concern the restrictive measures on commerce applied by the Dominican Republic authorities against products originating in El Salvador".
According to El Nuevo Diario, the groups' economic advisor Rigoberto Monge told Spanish news agency EFE that these protective measures have impeded Dominican importers from clearing goods from El Salvador through Customs warehouses.
He said that red tape was affecting some twenty producers of fresh juices, liquors, candies, paper and bags made of synthetic materials.
Monge said that the main restriction has been the use of "safeguards" for local production, which limits the amount of products from El Salvador that can be imported without harming local production. Monge said that this tactic was used to restrict the import of four products but is currently in place on just one, since it was proven that the others did not interfere with local production. Monge said this was a clear case of protectionism.
