Dominican Cardiology Society president Dr. Wilson Ramirez says that a recent study on heart risk factors in the DR revealed that 30% of the population suffers from hypertension. He said this means that almost 2 million people over the age of 18 have high blood pressure. He also mentioned that 29% is overweight, 22% has high cholesterol, 20% is addicted to smoking and 10% is diabetic.
He said these are the main risk factors for heart disease, the leading cause of general mortality in the country.
As reported in El Dia, Ramirez said that Dominicans suffer from malnutrition, and he predicted that the incidence of these diseases would increase with time. He advised people who suffer from these problems to eat low-fat diets, drink lots of water and do exercise, among other recommendations.
