President Leonel Fernandez has decorated French statesman Lionel Robert Jospin with the heraldic order of Christopher Columbus, with the rank of Grand Silver Cross. Jospin served as Prime Minister of France from 1997-2002. Jospin ran for the French Socialist Party again in 2002 and was defeated by Jacques Chirac.
The decoration followed a master class, "Some Lessons of the Crisis" held by Jospin at the Presidential Palace yesterday. He was accompanied by First Lady Margarita Cedeno.
During the ceremony, Presidency Minister Cesar Pina Toribio recognized Jospin's work in tackling youth employment and securing a 35-hour working week in France.
Jospin said that developing countries should play a greater role in world inter-social economic entities because these are the nations that suffer most from the world economic upheavals. Jospin says that manipulating exchange rates can have distorting effects that are as serious as custom barriers and this needs to be addressed. He pointed out that those who have the least responsibility in creating the crisis are the ones that end up paying for it.
Jospin also stated that the globalization of world capital movements has had an impact on the whole planet and described the current crisis as "a crisis of capitalism". He said the crisis began in Wall Street and spread all over. He said that states had saved the financial system by increasing their budgetary deficits and taking on public debt. He observed that the countries that did best appear to be the emerging economies - Brazil, China and South Africa.
