Contrary to what is being said in some quarters, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) representative in the Dominican Republic, Manuel Labrado, says he believes that the electricity subsidy should not be eliminated now, but rather in the year 2012. The IDB executive said that before the subsidy is removed, the national authorities should make payment for electricity more effective and eliminate electricity theft.
"Evidently the theft of electricity is a great problem for the Dominican Republic", he told reporters. He said he knows that the government is pressed to find additional resources to cover this year's energy subsidy, since the US$380 million set aside in the budget for this purpose was already used up.
According to Labrado, the Strategic Plan that the IDB worked out together with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at improving the country's electricity system establishes that the subsidy has to be eliminated within two years.
Labrado said the IDB had been invited to attend an electricity sector meeting with President Leonel Fernandez on the 24th of this month. The meeting will also bring together representatives from the IMF and the World Bank and they will analyze the electricity subsidy and other energy issues.
