The International Sanitation Organization (ISO) has declared the Dominican Republic totally free of the bird influenza that was detected in the country in a group of fighting cocks in the province of La Altagracia and in other regions in 2007. The ISO said that the country should now be able to sell its poultry and egg products without any risk for the countries that import them.
The former president of the National Poultry Commission, Wilfredo Cabrera, said that Dominican farmers are ready to supply these products to countries like Haiti, Venezuela and Cuba. "These countries have expressed an interest in opening the poultry and egg market with the DR, and they were only waiting for the certification from the international organization to begin purchasing these products", Cabrera said. The poultry farmers leader told reporters that Dominican producers can supply Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela with poultry and eggs, since they already produce 16 million chickens a month and have the ability to increase their productive capacity. He said that the resumption of poultry and egg exports would not lead to any shortages on the local markets because the producers have the appropriate technology to allow them to raise and reproduce the necessary chickens for export.
