Business sector, trade union and community representatives in Santiago have expressed their rejection of the aspirations of city council members and officials who are seeking pensions of RD$50,000 a month, during the transition period for the administration of the city. Santiago Provision Wholesalers Association (Amaprosan) president, businessman Jorge Manuel Urena, said that it was inappropriate to apply for pensions at this time. "I believe that this is not the best time to pension these council members, especially because of the delicate economic situation that the country is going through", he added.
The municipal coordinator of civil society group Citizen Participation, Paulino Sarita, called on the city's representative sectors to stand up and reject the proposal of these council members.
Representatives of the Federation of Santiago Neighborhood Associations held a protest march outside City Hall to demonstrate their rejection for the council members' bid. Federation spokesman Andres Ramos said that his group would be on alert in order to prevent the approval of the pensions.
The pensions proposal was submitted by PLD council member Luis Jose Estevez, and it has already been reviewed by the council and sent to a commission for study. The commission is due to deliver its report during the next city council session.
