More than 1,000 workers who were demanding medical insurance, payment for overtime and other normal labor rights, were fired yesterday by the Barrick Gold mining concession in Cotui.
Moreover, according to online news reports, Peruvian workers contracted by the company took their case to their Embassy asking the ambassador to investigate why the company is not fulfilling their obligation to pay them in US dollars. The Peruvians joined the Dominicans who were demanding medical insurance, wage increases, overtime and improvements in food service. As reported, in response to the Peruvians' demands, they were told that they were illegal workers, and so the company did not have to fulfill the contracted agreement.
