The director of the Museum of Dominican Man, Juan Rodriguez Acosta is protesting that the work by Barrick Gold mine in Cotui is destroying valuable pre-Columbian historical sites.
"They (Barrick Gold) are dynamiting the entire mountain and reducing it to nothing. They process the limestone, marble and the rocks of the mountain and those ruins go back to thousands of years and represent our pre-Columbian past, and under no circumstance can be destroyed," he told Clave Digital.
A report prepared for Barrick Gold by archaeologist Harold Olsen, from 2004-2008, details the archaeological sites in the area of Pueblo Viejo. These are 534, of which 10 have pictographic and indigenous content.
At the time, the research was carried out to determine the presence of these sites and evaluate them and propose strategies for their preservation.
Olsen said that the findings would enable identifying places where Indians and colonizers lived together. In the report, Olsen suggested carrying out more exhaustive archaeological work in the areas where excavations were planned and where the sites could be at risk.
But, Rodriguez Acosta said that in the end, Olsen did not detail the caves that should be preserved intact for their cultural importance, but certified the mining company to proceed with the excavations. He said this is not possible without the authorization from the administration of the Museum of Dominican Man or the Ministry of Culture.
