The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that hundreds of passengers on Spirit Airlines at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport had to change their travel plans before dawn today because their flights were "pre-cancelled" or suddenly re-routed in anticipation of a possible strike by the airline's pilots. According to some comments by passengers, pilots were calling in sick, as the strike loomed. Spirit has about 150 flights a day, and services Santiago, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. The pilots had until 12 midnight to reach an agreement with the airline. Spirit carries 19% of US domestic passengers and 40% of the international fliers who use the Fort Lauderdale airport, and they are the largest carrier at the airport. Neither the airline nor the pilots were talking to reporters in the hope that the strike could be prevented. However, the latest reports from Santiago and Santo Domingo are saying that the strike did, indeed, go ahead, and passengers were sent to their destinations on other airlines.
