Apparently two murders were committed in Sosua yesterday. One involving an expat and one involving a 13-year old Haitiano killed by another Haitiano, two years his senior.

There is more info on other boards. I am too lazy to copy.

I don't know the kid but someone who did on DR1 posted this :

"Seeing his picture with that article was shocking. His name was Tony, one of the shoe-shine kids. The only one who always seemed gentle, was smiling and polite, never aggressive like many of the other kids. He's one of the older boys, not part of the new group that has recently swarmed Sosua's streets. Very sad... maybe this will light a fire under the powers-that-be to be more proactive about these street kids."

The word is a 15 year old displaced Haitian is the accused.

As you said WSJ3 what a waste.

As for the other murder this is the buzzz on DR1:

Note : This poster is replying to some other posters blaming the deceased demise on his decision to move/stay in Sosua:

The topic of prostitution has no business being on this thread. The Ex-pat who was killed had just won a $3 million dollar lawsuit (which might be a good lead), and the kids were most like fighting over money or turf or 50 cents worth of glue for all we know. When people get killed in Sosua there is a scent in the air of blaming the victim for wanting to live in a town with a reputation. Prostitution did not get either of these people killed.

Sosua is what it is and has been before anyone I know of one this forum moved to the DR. There is likely to be more info coming out in the next few days and it doesn't need to be complicated by issues which have been covered endlessly in other threads. Let's stay on topic."

DR1 seems to be the most informed and current regarding this topic IMHO

An American, Arthur Parlo, 63 years old, has been shot and killed in his Sosua home.
Police have revealed few details of the shooting, but say they have good clues as to the identity of the killers.http://www.dominicancentral.com/displayImage.php?phud=royston/arthur-parlo.jpg
The National Police commander in Sosua, Colonel Nelson Araujo, said that robbery was not thought to be the motive at the moment

People who knew the American Parlo described him as a fine person and were mystified as to who would want to kill him.
Parlo managed a major law firm in Oregon, United States, which was involved in a US$3.9 million law suit against a group of Dominican businessmen.
He owned a luxurious million dollar home in Playa Chiquita where he lived alone with two employees.

I was there that day and they showed the dead kids friends on the news trying to get at the kid with a bat while he was getting arrested. i recognized the kid with the bat from earlier in the day walking down the street. another group of younger kids are the swarmers, they run up and try to hug you. then they tell you how hungry they are. some of them have shine kits and will try to shine your shoes or clean your sneakers with a toothbrush and some window cleaner.

As far as sniffing glue causing anyone to kill... I'm not buying that. Part of the effect is lightheadedness from the fumes and the high wears off quick, and you can't really function to well when your high from fumes, just think about any time you caught too many gas fumes or turpentine fumes maybe ... its basically the same thing. I'm sure its theoretically possible but i doubt it serevely. My guess is these kids had some kind of disagreement.

Hey, it happens every day. Where do you think Anoeca makes it's money?

How do you think they can pay the interest rates they pay?

Ever asked Aneca for a loan? I'm surprised the guy doesn't own half of Puerto Plata.(maybe he does)

But it's one thing if a local does it(or even a well connected expat), it's another thing when somebody gets off the boat and tries to do it.

Two detained in killing of American lawyer Art Tarlow

posted on: Jun 28 2010 19:5 .

As family and friends shared stories at Art Tarlow's memorial service Friday afternoon in Portland, police in the Dominican Republic awaited analysis of two guns recovered this week as part of the investigation into the lawyer's slaying.

Tarlow, a prominent Portland business and construction lawyer, was shot to death June 10 inside his winter home in Sosua, a small town on the Caribbean country's north coast. He was 68.

(Original article at http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/dominicans_seize_guns_detain_t.html)

Police have been investigating whether the death was connected to a legal battle waged by Tarlow and a group of investors against a Sosua businessman after a failed attempt to build a luxury casino. Tarlow's group, Mocarello, had recently won a $3.9 million lawsuit that would force the sale of a hotel that the investment group's documents said served as collateral.

Sosua police executed a search warrant Thursday and confiscated a pistol and a revolver, said Eddie Bueno Disla, the lead investigator on Tarlow's killing. Bueno said he had detained two people -- the driver and security guard of Sosua businessman Armando Casciati.

The investigator did not release the names of those detained or say where the search warrants were served.

Casciati, the Italian owner of the company that Tarlow's group faced off with in court, has been told that he cannot leave the country, Bueno said.

Police sent the pistol and the revolver to the country's crime lab on Wednesday to see if they matched with the gun used in the shooting.

"There's a lot of things I can't say over the phone," Bueno said Friday.

Initial investors in the casino deal put in $1.8 million, with Tarlow providing $100,000 in May 2004, according to Mocarello documents. The $3.9 million was to cover the initial $1.8 million investment as well as damages, legal fees and a separate $750,000 lien on the property.

In an e-mail earlier this week, Casciati told The Oregonian that he believed Mocarello's investors were all Dominican and that a decision on the sale of the hotel remained in legal limbo.

"I never met Mr. Tarlow -- I did not even know of his existence," Casciati wrote. "All the shareholders of Mocarello are Dominicans and I have no clue of other people having interests in this company."

Let's all watch and see what an American or expat's life really is worth in the Dominican Republic

Santiago- Dominican Republic authorities announced Wednesday an investigation into the death of a British national Denise D. Courtnay, 60, whose decomposed body was found in a grassy area near the town Cabarete, Sosúa (north).
Sosúa Police commander Nelson Diaz Araujo told the press of the ongoing investigation, but clarified that there are no arrests so far.
The coroner Freddy Salazar transferred the foreigner’s body for an autopsy to Regional Forensics in Santiago.
Courtnay’s body was found yesterday in the sector Playa Rocon, Cabarete by locals who found her by the smell and notified the Police.
A police source said the foreigner, who owned three apartments in Cabarete and Sosúa, had disappeared one week ago and prompted a search by agents and some residents.
