Representatives of restaurants, bars, discotheques, car washes, colmadones and popular music bands are complaining they are being put out of business by the new midnight weekday curfew. Restaurants that remained open after midnight were ordered closed on the first day of the operation. The curfew is extended to 2 am on weekends. The curfew was imposed and is being enforced by joint military-police corps as a governmental reaction to increased crime nationwide. The decision makes anyone on the streets after midnight subject to questioning by the security forces. With the measures, the government that had been timid about reacting to the increase in violence now takes extreme measures.
An editorial in El Caribe called the militarization of city streets after midnight counterproductive and spectacular. The newspaper suggested the military carrying out only registrations only when suspicious situations are detected.
Chief of the Police Bernardo Santana said that 1,119 persons were registered, and 206 were arrested for further questioning on the first two evenings of the implementation -- Wednesday and Thursday. The corps retained 79 vehicles and 47 RX115 motorcycles for failure of the drivers to present correct ownership documentation.
