The Ministry of Tourism is heading a project to restore the beaches of Long Beach, Playa Dorada and Cabarete in Puerto Plata, and Boca Chica and Juan Dolio along the southeast coast. The funding for the beach restoration projects is coming from a US$5 tax on travelers levied last year. And the Ministry is asking tourism businesses in these areas to come up with an additional US$3.5 million for the improvements.

Long Beach once was Puerto Plata city's leading beach, but this was abandoned due to sewage waters contaminating the beach. But with the implementation of a World Bank sewage water project for Puerto Plata, the restoration of the beach became a possibility. The Ministry is now restoring the beach as a complementary work. Sand for the extension of the beaches that had been affected by erosion, is coming from Rio San Juan, further to the east in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province.

The Ministry says it is investing US$19 million to improve 14 kms of beaches with the depositing of 1.4 million cubic meters of sand. Once restored, the public beaches will fall under management of a joint body made up by the city governments and tourism businesses and the Ministry of Tourism to oversee the following of new ordinance and rulings for the upkeep of the beach.

Long Beach is scheduled to reopen to the public on 5 August, with the visit of President Leonel Fernandez. A party with Hermanos Rosario and Krisspy music bands has been planned.

Diario Libre, nevertheless, points out that the companies that are carrying out the restoration of the beaches, Boskalis International (Netherlands), Grupo Cadic of Spain and Cesigma of Cuba were contracted without a tender by the Ministry of Tourism. Tourism Minister Jimenez defended his choice of companies, saying that Boskalis has a fine reputation for restoring beaches.
