Las Terranas trip June 2010

Needed a change from the same old Cabarete-Sosua scene so headed out to Las Terranas with a wingman last Thursday. I had heard the LT chicas were suffering as there was no tourists around and maybe we could also get some fishing in.

The road from Gasper Hernandez to the LT-Sanchez turn off has just been resurfaced so we breezed all the way through with no hold-ups in about 2 hours plus a lunch stop in Abreu near Cabrera.

Expected the mountain road to LT to be slow as it has full of pot-holes for years so wasn’t really surprised when a few guys shouted out that the road was impassable. Yeah right!!

Went a few miles and started to encounter trees partially blocking the road, then trees and piles of rubbish, then trees and burning tires. Oh shit there’s a huelga (strike/riot) going on!!! Having experienced these before we knew it wasn’t too bright for 2 gringos in a nice car to be driving straight into one but we figured we’d come this far and we ain’t turning back so carried on.

Reached LT town and everything was shuttered up, broken glass bottles everywhere and no-one around. LT has a one-way road system with a fork to the right for traffic entering and we could see groups of masked guys hanging around burning barricades ahead of us. Looking down the left fork (for traffic exiting LT) we could see a PN pick-up truck full of cops.

So a dilemma, drive the correct route and encounter pissed off rioters or drive the incorrect route and encounter a truck full of cops. Guess which route we took!!!

The cops told us to get the fuck off the streets (I’m sure I heard the phrase including the words malditos/gringos and estupidos at least once) but they kindly escorted us to our hotel.

No problems.

The receptionist informed us that everything was shut until tomorrow morning due to the huelga. Everything as in bars, restaurants, colmados, supermarkets…..everything!!!!

Not believing this and as our apt is in the centre of town, we ventured out. Yup she was right, everything was closed. Damn our plan for the evening was rapidly vanishing. The police station was 100 yards away and we could see the PN and SWAT teams gearing up so we went to have a chat with them.

The ‘commandante’ confirmed to us that LT was in lock-down whilst they regained control and he didn’t expect anything to be open until the morning but suggested that maybe something could be open along the El Portillo road.

So back to the car and headed out again.

After about a less than 5 minute drive came across a beach bar that was seemingly open with a few people around. Did a quick u-turn and had a cold Presidente in my hands muy rapido.

So much for everything being closed.

Headed back to the bar at Palapa beach from the previous day hoping to find some afternoon delight, but apart from 2 haggard old crones there was nothing to be found.

I am told that they are planning/constructing a new link road from Nagua area direct to LT along the coastline, that would be really cool when or if it gets done!!

thanks for the report on las terrenas. I went there something like 8 or 9 years ago (yikes!) just for a weekend, stayed on Playa Bonita. Was a sleepy little place then, but I admit once night fell I didn't really venture anywhere. Playa Bonita was one of the nicest beaches I had ever seen, but I did get bored with the peace and tranquility after 3 days.

Good to hear the place has a nightlife, it may change my vacation destination in the future.
