Tax collections are up for the ninth consecutive month, compared to the same month in 2009. Nonetheless, these collections are still less than budgeted. As reported by the DGII, collections in May were RD$14.8 billion, 9.9% more than in May 2009. The DGII fell short by RD$789.7 million, 5% less than budgeted. Sales tax revenues were up 14.4%, with RD$395 million more. Petrol taxes were also up by RD$692.7 million. Property taxes grew 17.8%, with RD$55.2 million more in May 2010 than in May 2009. The DGII reports tax revenues of RD$79.5 billion, 8.1% more than for the first five months of the year in 2009.
The government needs all the revenues it can get, after the high spending in the run-up to the congressional and municipal election last May. Nelson Suarez of Hoy reported on Sunday, that the government has a fiscal deficit of RD$21.66 billion for the first four months of the year. The government had revenues for RD$81,267.8 million and spent RD$102.925.1 million. The government borrowed RD$17,126 million from January to April, which is RD$10,786 million more than in 2009.
