Investigative journalist Alicia Ortega, of El informe con Alicia (The Report with Alicia), is claiming that the director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD), Hector Rodriguez Pimentel, is circulating a letter threatening many leading companies in the country that they would be sued for defamation if they continue to advertise on El Informe con Alicia Ortega. Ortega accused Rodriguez of a campaign of extortion, bribery and intimidation that seeks to censor her show. She said this is a blatant and malicious effort to curtail good journalism in the Dominican Republic. She warned President Leonel Fernandez of the serious effects an action of this kind by a government official could have on freedom of speech.
Ortega says that Rodriguez Pimentel is trying to prevent Grupo SIN and its programs El Informe con Alicia Ortega, El Despertador and Noticias SIN, from reporting on the IAD director's actions. He said that if Rodriguez thinks he has been defamed by the content of any of the Group's programs, he should take the case to court and not try to intimidate advertisers.
SIN Group spokesman Fernando Hasbun called on businesspeople to resist being intimidated by someone whose actions in government have been seriously questioned by public opinion and even by the authorities of the Ethics Commission and the Department for the Persecution of Administrative Corruption.
Hoy reports that this is an unprecedented event. The newspaper says that nowhere in the Constitution or Dominican law is there any legality whereby advertisers would be held responsible for the content of the media.
