The urban unemployment rate in the DR is up 0.8% from 14.1% in 2008 to 14.9% in 2009. The average in Latin America and the Caribbean increased from 7.3% to 8.1%, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reports this month. Diario Libre says that there are more unemployed women in the work force. Women's unemployment was 23.2% in 2009, compared to 22.8% in 2008. This is primarily due to massive dismissals in manufacturing free zones, and the decline in tourism and the construction sector.
ECLAC's Labor Situation in Latin America and the Caribbean bulletin forecasts continued improvements in the labor market through 2010, although several countries are far from overcoming the impact of the crisis and the degree of economic recovery differs significantly from one country to another, say ECLAC and the International Labor Organization (ILO).
