Harsco Corp., an industrial services and engineered products company, announced on Monday that it has been contracted for the construction of the new Pueblo Viejo gold processing facility in the Dominican Republic. Harsco will provide rental scaffolding and concrete mixing equipment, related engineering services and turnkey labor support to the projects, both of which are being managed by Fluor Daniel, a subsidiary of international giant Fluor Corporation and one of the region's largest construction and engineering contractors. Construction-related activity at the gold processing site is expected to continue for the next several years and provide numerous follow-on bidding opportunities, Harsco reports.
The Pueblo Viejo gold mine under Barrick Gold has been in the press since the signing of the controversial contract with the Dominican government, and has been widely criticized for being against national interests. The company has also been in the spotlight for a suspected poisoning case at its plant, a workers' strike in demand of medical insurance, its mass hiring of foreign personnel, and harmful environmental practices.
