Rick Wade, senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, will lead a delegation of 10 small and medium-sized US businesses on a trade mission to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and Kingston, Jamaica, June 13-19 to promote US exports in the Caribbean. The event is taking place at the Santo Domingo Hilton Hotel.
Wade motivated more Dominican companies to take advantage of the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement. Since the start of the treaty in March 2007, the DR has accumulated a negative balance of US$7.18 billion. Imports have been US$19,137 million, and exports US$11,957 million.
The mission is part of the US government's National Export Initiative that seeks to double US exports within 5 years. It is sponsored by the US Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration.
US companies are meeting with potential business partners and networking with key Dominican and Jamaican government and industry officials. The business delegation seeks to promote consumer goods, construction and automotive sectors with foreign buyers and governments.
The US is the primary trading partner for both the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. In 2009, US exports to the DR and Jamaica totaled $5.27 billion and $1.45 billion, respectively. The Caribbean region is the third-largest export market for US manufactured goods in Latin America, behind Mexico and Brazil.
Participating companies are Atlanta Global Resources, Inc. of Tucker, Ga; Atrium Shutters of Davie, Fla; Bon Trade International Corporation of Miami, Fla; CMD Trailer Sales & Leasing of Jacksonville, Fla; Freeman Schwabe Machinery of Cincinnati, Ohio; Magna-Bon II, LLC of Okeechobee, Fla; Morton Supplies of Morton, Ill; Palladio Beauty Group of Hollywood, Fla; and PGT Industries of North Venice, Fla.
The DR has a US$966.8 million dollar trade deficit with the US for the first quarter (January to April) of 2010, up 54% when compared to the same period last year. This is up from a deficit of US$627.4 million in 2009. Dominican exports were up 24.6%, from US$1.056.9 million to US$1,131.1 million, as reported in Hoy.
