The Fernandez administration said it has nothing to do with the actions of Dominican Agrarian Institute director Hector Rodriguez Pimentel who is said to have sent threatening legal notices to advertisers on any TV shows related to investigative journalist Alicia Ortega or Grupo SIN that contain "defamatory mentions" about him.
Speaking for the Presidency, Presidency Minister Cesar Pina Toribio said that Rodriguez Pimentel's intimidation of advertisers of the El Informe con Alicia Ortega show is strictly a private matter. "That is the exclusive responsibility of the person concerned. I do not think there is any possibility or fear that the advertisers or any sector could feel intimidated by actions of this nature and I reiterate that at no point in history has there been so much widespread and full freedom of expression," he told the press.
Rodriguez Pimentel, who was one of the highest-profile figures campaigning alongside President Leonel Fernandez in the recent congressional and municipal election, is one of the government officials most often mentioned in the press for claims of major corruption in his public functions. The director of the Department for Prevention of Corruption (DPCA) himself, Hotoniel Bonilla once described him as "pathologically corrupt." Bonilla now says that the recent actions have apparently been taken because Rodriguez Pimentel is "desperate." The DPCA has an ongoing investigation into what it describes as "anomalies" at the INDRHI when Rodriguez Pimentel was its director, but despite the comments acknowledging there was corruption, no action has been taken.
TV investigative journalist Alicia Ortega has presented evidence of widespread overvaluing of dams under his responsibility when he was director of the Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI).
