Gibel Orsini, marketing manager for the private electricity company that serves the Samana area, Compania de Luz y Fuerza de las Terrenas has denounced the fact that the El Progreso del Limon company is seeking to forcibly replace them as the main power provider for the growing Samana area. Luz y Fuerza says that the new company is acting "against the General Electricity Law, its rulings and with the support and compliance of the state regulator, the Superintendence of Electricity."
Orsini said that El Progreso del Limon does not have any document that grants its distribution territory within the area and its operation is basically purchasing power from EdeNorte to sell it within the concession area of Luz y Fuerza. Luz y Fuerza generates the power it sells.
Luz y Fuerza says that it has been operating in Samana since 1994, following all the laws and regulations that cover the sector as defined in the General Electricity Law. Recently a court sentence ordered Luz y Fuerza to halt its operations in favor of El Progreso del Limon.
The company says that this is proof that weak institutions ensure that few municipalities can say they have the 24/7 power supply that Luz y Fuerza serves to the communities of Las Terrenas, Las Galeras and El Limon in Samana.
