Puerto Plata businessman Jose Polanco says that 50% of travel-related businesses have closed as a result of the tourism slump affecting the province. He said that just a few years ago tourism was the base of the economy. As reported in Hoy, he said the construction of a modern cruise ship terminal and cargo terminal could make the difference. He said that aside from efforts to restore the hotel sector, efforts needed to be made to attract more foreign retirees as potential purchasers of homes and farms in the area.
