The Senate approved a proposal to modify the law on the sworn statement of assets required of government officials in a second reading yesterday. The proposed change is aimed at punishing the public officials with prison sentences of between 5 and 10 years and by disqualifying them from occupying any public office for up to 10 years if they do not submit a sworn statement of assets and are not able to justify the earnings obtained during the exercise of their functions.
The proposal was submitted by senators Francisco Dominguez Brito and Charlie Mariotti and approved without any opposition from the 21 senators present.
The legislation establishes a fine equal to twice the increase in assets that the official has received during his/her term in office.
The initiative to change the law on the sworn declaration of assets and illicit enrichment obliges government officials to present a detailed, sworn and notarized statement of their assets.
The Senate version of the proposal will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for discussion and approval.
