The incidence of rabies in animals has been reduced by 50% this year, with 15 of the 32 provinces not reporting any cases. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said that 95 cases of rabies in animals have been reported so far, 103 fewer than at this time last year. The minister attributed the decrease to the health authorities' nationwide animal vaccination campaign. Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, Duarte, Elias Pina, Espaillat, Independencia, El Seibo, Pedernales, Montecristi, Samana and Puerto Plata were the provinces that did not report any rabid animals. The minister said that 1.2 million animals had been vaccinated for free during the campaign that is still going on, and he urged people to take their animals to the local Public Health for vaccination.
