Opposing factions within the PRD prevented the party from holding a meeting of its Political Commission (CP) that was scheduled to begin today. Nevertheless, the tides of turmoil seem to be receding within the party. Yesterday, representatives of Hipolito Mejia, Miguel Vargas Maldonado and Luis Abinader's factions were able to meet and talk about reaching a consensus. Party president Vargas Maldonado decided to postpone today's meeting without setting a future date. This will give representatives of all the factions time to reach an agreement and "to exchange information about the purpose of the meeting (of the CP)". This was the official party version of things, but sources told Diario Libre that the decision was the result of a phone conversation between Vargas Maldonado with former President Hipolito Mejia on Monday night. The Political Commission meeting was set back until after Vargas Maldonado's trip to the United States where he will take part in the Socialist International World Council annual meeting. This meeting will be held on the 22 and 23 June, according to PRD secretary general Orlando Jorge Mera.
