An airline pilots' strike at Spirit, the Ft. Lauderdale-based economy airline, has left thousands of passengers stranded in the DR. As reported in Hoy newspaper, more than 1,500 people were left without any way to travel after more than 15 flights between Ft. Lauderdale and Santo Domingo, Santiago and Punta Cana were cancelled. Spirit pilots rejected the company's 30% wage increase offer and walked out last Saturday. In the meantime, airline employees were calling passengers with reservations to inform them of the flight cancellations. Spirit is the largest airline at Ft. Lauderdale International Airport.
