Residents of Cabrera in the northern province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez are taking action to resist the privatization of beaches. This gradual process of privatization has been taking place nationwide over the years, despite the fact that it is in violation of the previous Constitution. The 2010 Constitution recognizes rights of seafront property purchasers and this further curtails community use of the beaches.
The people of Cabrera are calling for a Saturday, 19 June "Concert for the Love of the Sea" at the Cabrera municipal park as of 5pm. Later that evening, participants will walk from Cabrera to El Caleton Grande beach, at 8pm. They will spend the evening on the beach in a symbolic protest.
Luis Carvajal of the state UASD university environmental commission says that privatization has gathered pace because most people are indifferent, and minority interests are complicit with powerful economic, political or social sectors, and with the backing of government powers that are subordinated to particular interests. He says that the takeover of the beaches has reached dramatic levels and mentions that even fishermen find it hard to access the beaches for their livelihood. A bus for anyone wanting to join the protest will leave from the UASD Alma Mater gate at noon on Saturday, 19 June. The return trip is on Sunday at 10am.
