Spirit Airlines says it will start flying again on Friday. Its flights were grounded on Saturday after pilots went on strike. A tentative deal has been reached, but the union says the strike will not officially end until the pilots sign a back-to-work agreement.
The airline offered passengers rebates for the full amount of their cancelled flight, as well as an extra US$100 credit for future flights and helped passengers get flights with other airlines.
Spirit is a main connection for flights from Santiago and Santo Domingo to Fort Lauderdale International Airport in Florida.
Spirit pilots demanded equitable pay to other low-cost airlines such as JetBlue and AirTran. The Miami Herald reported that Spirit turned a US$107 million profit in 2009, making it the most profitable airline in the US.
