Detroit Pistons forward, Dominican-American Charlie Villanueva will be playing for the Dominican Republic in the CentroBasket tournament that starts on 5 July in Santo Domingo. Villanueva was the leading point scorer in the Pre-World Tournament played in Puerto Rico last year. DR team spokesman Cesar Saint-Hilaire said that Villanueva would report for training with the national team on the 25th or 26th of June.
Meanwhile, Dominican-born star Al Horford said he would not be able to make it because of commitments with his team, the Atlanta Hawks. Horford played for the Dominican Republic in the Centrobasket 2008 held in Mexico and in last year's Puerto Rico Pre-World.
It has yet to be announced whether Dominican-born Francisco Garcia (Sacramento Kings) will play for the DR.
Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the US Virgin Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and the Dominican Republic will compete at the Centrobasket.
This is the fifth time the tournament will be hosted by the Dominican Republic.
The Dominicans had hoped to earn a place at the FIBA World Championship last summer when they also had Horford and Garcia in their squad, but they finished outside the top four after suffering a couple of narrow defeats, including one to Canada who took the fourth and final spot on offer. Brazil, Puerto Rico and Argentina took the other three places for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
