The Punta Cana-Macao Energy Consortium in Punta Cana says that it has been testing the use of 300 pre-paid electrical meters since November 2009. This is the first time the prepaid model has been tried out in the DR.
Julian Castaneda of CEPM said that the meters could result in 20% savings for users and can be used nationwide. The meters register power consumption and carry over the amount of purchased power remaining.
The CEPM says the program is being implemented because of problems in collecting for the service. They have an interest in expanding the service, with the installation of 750 more meters.
