On her Channel 9 Saturday TV show, investigative reporter Nuria Piera featured the case of Sonya Erudice Uribe Moya, a 40-year lawyer who at the time of the interview worked as a legal advisor at the National Money Laundering Committee's Financial Analysis Unit. The TV show focused on her ties to Mary Pelaez, who is suspected of money laundering in the case of Puerto Rican fugitive Jose David Figueroa Agosto. Piera showed that the Volkswagen Touareg 2008 in which Figueroa Agosto's driver was seen entering the Ocean One complex in Cabarete where he had an apartment was transferred to her ownership, despite the case being under investigation. Uribe admitted her close friendship with Pelaez, explaining they were neighbors.
The government entity's legal counsel appeared to be under great pressure during the interview with Nuria Piera. "The SUV that you mention I bought in August; no, that's a lie, in October, in September, in September 2009. The purchase was through the company Corniel and Corniel, where I am a partner. They owed me fees," she said.
El Caribe reports that this is the same office that presented an appeal for legal protection in favor of Mary Pelaez so that a house in Arroyo Hondo that District prosecutors say belongs to Figueroa Agosto could be returned to her. The report also focused on how Uribe moved from living in an apartment to living in a house during this employment.
Uribe resigned following the interview with Piera.
Piera, nevertheless, did not look into who had hired Uribe or any other members of the department.
