First Lady Margarita Cedeno is actively promoting the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's campaign to reduce world poverty and hunger. The First Lady has served as Extraordinary Ambassador of FAO since 16 October 2009.
The 1billionhungry Project is aiming to obtain 300,000 signatures in support through October. The FAO estimates that of the world's approximately one billion hungry people, 642 million live in Asia and the Pacific, 265 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, 53 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, 42 million in the Near East and North Africa and 15 million people in developed countries. FAO estimates that global agricultural production needs to grow by 70% if the estimated 9 billion people who will inhabit the planet in 2050 are to be fed.
