Today's Hoy newspaper focuses on the Municipality of Santo Domingo's complete neglect of the city's main boulevard, the Malecon. Despite the fact that the Malecon was recently voted one of the treasures of Santo Domingo's cultural heritage, it gives the impression of having been totally abandoned. Journalist Arismendy Calderon says that this neglect is evident along its entire 14 km extension from Autopista 30 de Mayo to the Avenida del Puerto connection. He mentions the lack of security, with the exception of the heliport area.
He says that even the informal food vendors have abandoned the area due to thieves. All this despite the fact that the city's loveliest avenue is home to several of the city's leading hotels and restaurants. He reports that complaints are a dime a dozen on Facebook, where city residents have unleashed their wrath and frustration against city mayor Roberto Salcedo who spent RD$14 million to build a monster park nicknamed "Zooberto" but has ignored the Malecon.
