Blackouts are back, and there are serious security concerns, but the Ministry of Education says it is going ahead with plans to install 3,000 plasma TVs in public schools this year. This RD$150 million program aims to increase teaching standards. Education Minister Melanio Paredes told Hoy that the government would spend an additional RD$250 million on solar panels and power inverters at the 600 schools that will receive five plasma TVs each. He said that 45,000 teachers in grade school would receive training.
Yamile Eusebio, coordinator of the Funglode Virtual Educa Santo Domingo 2010 program, says that they aim to have 1,200 schools using the programs by 2011. The programs are aimed at compensating for the low teaching standards by complementing them with educational TV programs.
As reported in El Dia, Paredes says he needs an additional RD$4 billion to implement this educational program. He said that they needed to improve security at the schools and create 78,000 parent and school committees that will oversee the care of the equipment.
The Virtual Educa program starts with the new school year on 23 August, at 600 public schools nationwide.
