As reported in Diario Libre, the recent rains, which have been welcomed by the farming sector, have filled the reservoirs that store water for irrigation and power generation.
The governmental committee that manages the country's dams says that the reservoirs have the capacity to hold the large volume of water produced by the recent heavy rainfall.
On the downside, the flooding has caused problems in cities where the inadequate drainage system is quickly clogged up with garbage. Today's Diario Libre comments in jest that Santo Domingo could be known as the "Venice of the Caribbean" when it rains, and urges the city council to do something about the situation. "Av. George Washington (Malecon) should not flood when it borders the sea," comments the editorial writer, raising the need to open a drainage channel to the sea. It goes on to say that now that the city council has raised the sidewalk gutters, the drains need to be cleared.
Yesterday's rains were so heavy that a JetBlue flight that was scheduled for arrival at Las Americas International Airport at 9:24am had to be re-routed to Santiago's Cibao International Airport because of the lack of visibility. Several flight arrivals due between 8:45 and 9:54am were delayed because of the weather conditions.
The forecast is for rains to continue nationwide this week as a tropical wave moves westward.
