Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) head Jose Vargas, the new senator-elect for Espaillat province, says that he will propose the creation of policies that would allow all public and private schools to have "free access to the internet at minimum speeds of 1Mbps".
Vargas was addressing a panel discussion on "Telecommunications: Regulators and Operators" during the Santo Domingo Congress on Virtual Education that is being held at Funglode. The panel was composed of senators and deputies from Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Netherlands Antilles, the Dominican Republic, Mexico Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Nicaragua.
Vargas said that he was "taking off his government official's hat" and taking on the duties of a senator, and in this new role he was going to push for legislation aimed at providing this type of free Internet services for educational institutions. He also said that he was going to propose a zero rate tax on Internet service, saying that this should lower the costs to customers by at least 30%.
