The DR is facing a third consecutive week of rain, according to weather forecasters. Anyone who was looking forward to a beach outing this weekend needs to consider swimming in the rain. The forecasters, nevertheless, say rains will be more spread apart and less intense.
Meanwhile, the constant rains are leading to increased flooding. The number of people forced from their homes because of the rains caused by the passing tropical wave has increased to 800, while the number of flooded homes reached 160.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reports that 598 of the displaced people are staying with family and friends, and the remaining 202 were located in government shelters, including 39 in San Juan de la Maguana municipal stadium.
As the rains continue over much of the country, the COE has maintained its red alert for Barahona, San Cristobal, El Seibo, Santo Domingo, the National District, San Juan de la Maguana, San Jose de Ocoa, San Pedro de Macoris and Monte Plata. A yellow alert is in place for Peravia, Azua, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Pedernales, Independencia, Bahoruco, Samana, Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), La Altagracia (Higuey), Hato Mayor, La Romana and Elias Pina.
Meanwhile, La Vega, Espaillat (Moca), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Monsignor Nouel (Bonao), and Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris, especially the Lower Yuna Basin) are under green alert.
The COE is also warning drivers in the capital and the province of Santo Domingo to take precautions due to urban flooding, and suggests that people living in vulnerable areas should remain on alert.
