The new emergency area building was inaugurated last week but is not yet in operation at the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital. However, the rains beat the engineers working on improving conditions at other areas within the Santo Domingo pediatric hospital when the entrance roof of the old section of the hospital collapsed shortly after 2am on Sunday. The area is due for remodeling as part of major refurbishing program at the country's leading children facility.
Visitors to this normally busy area of the hospital escaped injury due to the early hour.
The area since then has been cordoned off with yellow tape, and is expected to be back in operation in 10 days, said hospital deputy director Rosa Nieves.
Newspaper reports say that two men who were resting below woke up in time, scrambled out and were not injured. The roof collapsed as a result of the recent heavy rains.
The debris blocked the entrance to the hospital and staff had to equip a new side entrance. The hospital was built in 1955.
