A recent study carried out by sociologist Ramona Hernandez, the director of the Institute for Dominican Studies at New York University, shows that Dominican residents of the Big Apple are among the groups that show the highest poverty rate. The professor says that a lack of English, poor academic preparation and the selfsame discriminatory social structure in the United States are partly to blame for this situation. According to the investigator, her research found that Dominicans in Miami earned higher salaries than those living in NYC, and she attributed this to the fact that Miami is a bilingual city and New York is not. However, the study also showed that among Dominicans born in the United States, there was a higher rate of university study compared to corresponding groups from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American nations.
