The residents of Licey al Medio woke up wondering why their lights were glimmering. Looking outside, they found two men stealing the neighborhood electric cables. Victor Germosen Calderon, 19, and Julio Daniel Paulino Romero, 47, both from Santiago's Gurabo area, were caught red-handed, but the angry mob caught the thieves and beat them within an inch of their lives before the police arrived to take them and their swag into custody. Today's paper reports that Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez is warning people not to take justice into their own hands. He reported at least two cases where people caught stealing have been lynched. One of the two men caught trying to steal an SUV from a woman in San Isidro, Santo Domingo, was killed by a mob and his accomplice seriously wounded, and a young man caught in Cancino Adentro, National District was beaten to death by local people. The police chief warned the citizenry to refrain from these types of killings because the police will treat them like any other crime.
