The municipality of Rio San Juan in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province is protesting against the fact that the Ministry of Tourism contractors are removing sand from their area to create beaches in Puerto Plata province to the west. As reported in Diario Libre, a residents' committee from the Playa Grande area will be requesting the intervention of the Academy of Sciences to evaluate the environmental impact of the government's decision. They call it "undressing one saint, to dress up another." Monsignor Julio Cesar Cornielle expressed his support. "That is Rio San Juan's contribution to the beautification of Puerto Plata," he said. Some 1.4 cubic meters of white sand from Maria Trinidad Sanchez province are being dredged for depositing on Puerto Plata beaches.
