Famous Dominican chef Mike Mercedes died of a heart attack on Tuesday morning. He was taken to the Armed Forces Central Hospital. Center director Jose Francisco Araujo Vidal said Mercedes was dead on arrival at the hospital. Mike Mercedes had served as Presidential gastronomic advisor for several years. He also worked as a chef overseas prior to working in several governments since the days of dictator Rafael Trujillo. According to news reports, he had been suffering from colon cancer. In 2010, he was honored at the Santo Domingo Book Fair for his contributions to cooking in the DR.
