The Ministry of Public Works delivered the rebuilt, refurbished and repaved highway from Casabito-Constanza yesterday with an inauguration ceremony led by President Leonel Fernandez. The road had been repaired several times over the past 40 years, but this time there are high expectations it has been done right.
The panoramic highway was rebuilt by Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht and Company using the latest technology for stabilizing steep slopes, at a cost of US$112 million. It is 51 kilometers long, 6 meters wide, and links the Duarte Highway with the city of Constanza.
In his improvised speech, President Fernandez praised the community of Constanza for persistent efforts to obtain the new roadway and waxed lyrical about the beauty of the area. In addition to its touristic attractions, Constanza is an important fruit and vegetable farm area that depends on the highway to get its products to market. In 2007, the government had inaugurated a small landing field to facilitate tourism given the dire state of the highway. During the inaugural, Rafael Collado, president of the Constanza tourism cluster, motivated President Fernandez to find a definite solution to the ground connection. The President would hire the Brazilians for the job.
During his inaugural speech, President Fernandez announced plans to repave the 29-km highway connecting Constanza to Jarabacoa, a move that would certainly strengthen this mountain tourism area.
Fernandez said: "This highway is the equivalent for Constanza of the Metro to Santo Domingo". He said, "Now we have to do the second line of the metro, and so I promise that on 29 June 2011, I will be back to inaugurate the Constanza-Jarabacoa highway, he said.
