The South Korea government announced it would help finance several major development projects in the DR, including a coal-fired generation plant that will produce 400 megawatts of electricity. The South Koreans also pledged to help rebuild the country's somewhat antiquated electricity transmission lines.
Hoy newspaper reported the agreement was reached during a meeting between DR Vice President Rafael Alburquerque and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Panama.
Alburquerque told reporters that in addition to the electricity generator, South Korea was considering supporting other projects together with the Korea Eximbank. These include the DR government's plan to create the so-called "Electronic Government", the Improvement of Migration Services and the construction of a huge commercial center in the Cibao Valley.
Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa attended the meeting with a team of ministry specialists to discuss funding for these projects with Korea Eximbank representatives in Panama.
President Lee also praised the Dominican efforts to assist Haiti after the earthquake in January.
