Education Minister Melanio Paredes said the decision to fund the power arrears with funds from government department budgets is not positive. He described the electricity system in the DR as "the electric mess." He complained that of two million households that receive the service, only 900,000 households pay. "They are robbing the future of Dominicans," he said. He commented that it is an unfortunate structural problem that we have to take resources from health, education, potable water, and housing to give the funds to a business that in all other countries is self-sustainable. He advocated that the budget of his department be untouched by the reductions.
