The perception held by 71% of the population is that the local economy is not doing well. While this is a sobering figure, it is an improvement over the results of polls that were conducted in July and November 2009 when the percentage was pegged at 82% by the Gallup-Hoy poll. Residents of the south were most pessimistic while their counterparts in the more prosperous north and the metropolitan areas were more optimistic. Even in the east where tourism is king, the results were not promising with 63% saying that things were not going well. Among age groups, the young and middle aged (19-29 and 40-49) were the most negative at 77% and 72%. The difference between the sexes was minimal, 74% for men and 71% for women. Just 9% said that things were going well and 19% said that the economic situation was "fair". In other polls taken between 2005 and 2009, less than 20% of people interviewed said that the economic situation was good, against an average of 70% who considered thing to be "bad". In individual terms, more than half the people interviewed said that their personal finances were not good (57%), but this was down from the 64% in last year's poll. The poll, carried out between 12 and 16 June interviewed people in all parts of the country.
