With the congressional election barely over, speculation about who will win the PLD presidential nomination is making headlines. There are many who aspire to the position, now that the 2010 Constitution does not allow President Leonel Fernandez to run in 2012. The pre-candidates are First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, former PLD presidential candidate Danilo Medina, Interior and Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia, Dominican Civil Aviation director Jose Tomas Perez and Santiago senator Francisco Domingo Brito. Industry & Commerce Minister Ramon (Monchi) Fadul has said the pre-campaigning is untimely.
Nevertheless, yesterday, PLD secretary general Reinaldo Pared Perez made it clear that the PLD Political Committee has not prohibited aspiring candidates from promoting themselves. "Everyone in the PLD has the right to express an opinion," he said.
"Now the most important thing in the time we have left between now and 2012 is to try and finish well and do a good job of governing, because in great measure a good governmental administration from now to 2012 is what will catapult the PLD", he stressed. There has been a lot of activism recently by followers of Cedeno de Fernandez, who have been promoting her in New York and several cities in the DR, as well as the backers of Jose Tomas Perez.
There are also reports that the Danilo Medina camp will announce the official launch of his presidential aspirations with the aim of securing the PLD nomination once again. The event will take place at Professor Juan Bosch's graveside in the La Vega cemetery, coinciding with the 101st anniversary of the PLD founder's birth.
